Back Pain

Back pain is common in the workplace but it is an unnecessary problem. Back injuries are one of the highest reported reasons for work related absences. National Back Pain Association figures, reported that of 119.874 million days of certified incapacity, 63,793 were work related back accident/ injuries in 1996/7. With a cost of around £6,000,000,000 in lost production.

Back pain can arise as a consequence of lifestyles at opposite ends of the activity scale. Current lifestyle changes such as an increase in DIY and sporting activities, and on the opposite end of the scale, a more sedate lifestyle have led to an increase in reported lower back pain.

Common trends and presentations to both NHS and private clinics include, facet joint pain, soft tissue i.e. ligamentous strain, degenerative disc or joint pain, acute disc protrusion or prolapse.

When you come to the clinic you will be thoroughly assessed and treated according to the symptoms and problems you present with. We will also provide you with information to help prevent the problems recurring.

As your back pain is reduced, your physiotherapist will be able to determine the causes of the problem. These could be degenerative problems related to wear and tear, poor muscular control leading to deficient biomechanics of the spine, postural or work related due to the nature of your job.

For people who enjoy working in a group setting, we offer a Back School. This runs over a 6 week period and allows you to share your problems with others while receiving supervised rehabilitation.
